Oily Skin Tips To Keep Your Pores Clarified & Skin Glowing

Oily Skin Tips To Keep Your Pores Clarified & Skin Glowing

Did you recently take a look through our guide to figuring out your skin type and discover you have oily skin? Or did you already know you have oily skin but want more skincare tips? You’ve come to the right place!

We’ve taken a close look at what it means to have an oily skin type, but most importantly, at how to care for your skin if you have an oily skin type. Let’s get started!

What does it mean if you have oily skin?

Oily skin types generally look shiny and feel greasy or oily. They’re more prone to breakouts, blackheads and acne.

What causes oily skin?

Oily skin is caused by excess oil secretion in the skin. This happens because of:

  • Genetics and age
  • Overproduction of sebum and enlarged pores
  • Overdoing your skincare and skipping your moisturizer

Oily skin solutions:

You’ll want to look for products that help regulate your skin’s natural oil production. You’ll also likely want acne-fighting and pore-minimizing products.

Another common trait of oily skin types is large pores and blackheads, so you may also want to consider pore-minimizing products. (Did you know witch hazel helps to naturally reduce the look of large pores?)

Look for products that contain ingredients like:

  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Aloe vera
  • Jojoba oil
  • Lemon oil
  • witch hazel

Ingredients like these help to reduce excess oil while also helping you achieve hydrated and clear skin.

A few of our best products for oily skin that include these ingredients are our Tea Tree Face Cleanser, Tea Tree Face Toner, Perfect Skin Serum, and Shea Skin Therapy.

Oily skincare routine

It’s best to do your skincare routine twice a day. This allows you to enjoy refreshed skin to start your day and for you to remove the accumulated dirt, sweat, and makeup from the day in the evening.

Daily:

Weekly:

Apply a face scrub and a face mask (like our Tea Tree Face Mask) – use these after cleansing, exfoliate with the face scrub and then follow with your face mask. Thoroughly rinse and then follow with your toner, serum, and moisturizer.

Why do this weekly?

Exfoliating with a face scrub helps to remove dead skin cells that can clog your pores causing breakouts – this helps you get ahead of this common worry. While a face mask helps to deeply clarify your pores and reveal your skin’s natural radiance.

These products create a clean canvas for the rest of your skincare routine. But, as amazing as those benefits sound, exfoliating and doing a face mask too often can actually be harmful to your skin. So, do yourself a favour and make this a weekly routine instead of a daily one.

Skin tips for oily skin

A few tips that are helpful for oily skin types are:

  • Cleanse, tone, and hydrate your skin every day
  • Wear sunscreen (and don’t forget to reapply!)
  • Use a face mask weekly
  • Don’t skip moisturizing
  • NEVER sleep with makeup on
  • Change your pillowcase(s) regularly
  • Avoid touching your face (don’t do it!)
  • Wash your face after working out
  • Avoid very hot showers (we know, we know, they’re amazing and relaxing, but your skin feels a little differently about hot showers)
  • Don’t pop pimples (just don’t)
  • Re-evaluate your skin needs and skin type (we recommend doing this seasonally as the weather has such a huge impact on your skin!)
  • Make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep and drinking enough water
